Such a fantastic time was had yesterday at the 2015 Orange County Business Journal’s Family Owned Business Awards. Chelsey and I have an affinity not only with small business owners but with family-owned businesses, as well, probably because our father has owned his own business since the early 1990s.

According to the Conway Center for Family Business, family-owned businesses account for 50% of the U.S. gross domestic product and makeup approximately 80% of all business enterprise. The 2015 Edelman TrustBarometer study found that consumers trust family businesses 30% more than they trust large corporations (at least in the industrialized world). (more…)

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the Media Preview Night for Pageant of the Masters—an 82-year-old production based out of and born in Laguna Beach, CA—where famous works of art are recreated as “living pictures” using actual people.

If you’ve never been to a showing, first, let me preface this post by saying that seeing photos and reading about the event here do not do it justice.

Orange County Business Journal Honors Women in Business

Let me just say, this awards luncheon blew me away. It wasn’t because of the gorgeous Hotel Irvine ballroom, aglow with chandeliers and hundreds of people. Or the chic suits and secret service-like demeanor of some of the women and (surprisingly) men in attendance. The impression was made by a few common themes—themes that seem to keep popping up wherever I go, whatever events I attend, the past year. (more…)
